I began this series after purchasing the book Extinct Birds that documents the history of numerous bird species that have disappeared.  Records begin in the late 1600's indicating loss to natural events and the intrusion of man. I apply layers soil over an under-drawing of color chalks to suggest a sense of loss and the cycles of life.  Several drawings are based on photographs of the specimens or on skeletons with the suggestion of how the bird appeared.
